Four cities come up again and again, and many buyers do not think about height until they are already there.
- Cusco. The historic center is about 3,400 meters. The airport puts you there in an afternoon from Lima, which is a gift and a shock.
- Arequipa. About 2,300 meters. Drier, sunnier, and low enough that people skip the question. Some of them should not.
- Huancayo. About 3,200 meters, in a valley that feels practical and commercial. The height does not care that the city is not a postcard.
- Puno. About 3,800 meters. Among the highest places buyers treat as an ordinary option. Cold is part of every evening.
The Sacred Valley is often around 2,800 meters, lower than Cusco’s plaza and still high. “Lower than Cusco” is a comparison, not a clean bill of health.
What a weekend hides
The first night can be a headache, a racing heart when you climb a stair, and sleep that does not count. People treat that as initiation and book a notary. A weekend also includes adrenaline and a hotel that does the walking for you. Living there means the market, a stomach bug, a winter cold, and the same stairs in July when you are not on vacation. I have lived in various parts of Peru, including high country and low. I still will not tell you that you, specifically, will adapt. Your clinician knows your heart, your lungs, your blood, and a pregnancy. I know the stairs.
Care is not the same in every plaza
Lima has the concentration of private hospitals. Arequipa is the serious hub of the south. Cusco can handle a great deal and still sends bad cases toward Lima, including people who are truly sick from the altitude rather than merely uncomfortable. Huancayo and Puno have regional hospitals. They are not a substitute for deciding you can live in thin air. If your plan for an emergency is “I will drive to Lima,” look at the road. From Huancayo that road closes with huaicos. From Puno it is a long highland day. From Cusco you are more likely to fly, if you are well enough to fly.
How to test it without buying it
Stay longer than a long weekend, and do ordinary things: walk uphill, sleep, cook, get a minor illness if one arrives. Better, rent for a few months before you own anything. I can help arrange the rental. If the test fails, you have a story and your money. If it works, we look at property with a calmer head.
The region notes for these cities are on the places page. The quiz will push highland cities down the list if you say you need sea level. That is a reading aid, not a medical screen.
